Today focus on believing in yourself! There are a lot of people out there who will, as one of our incredible leaders puts it, “try to pour cold water on your fire…”
It’s easy for me to say don’t let them do that, but it’s all in how you look at and tackle your self doubt, because of their doubt in you, or in the product line you sell, or in the industry, and often it’s a reflection of their own self doubt too. Don’t we often mirror our fears onto others?
When I told my dad that I wanted to attend The University of Michigan he said, “Yes, and I want to go to the moon, but that doesn’t mean anything…” and we smiled that “are you freaking kidding me” smile that he was so great at.
Okay, so my academic track record wasn’t so hot, I had no proof that I could go to a top ten university… I had surely made other lofty claims and didn’t follow through (many young Entrepreneurial spirits do)… So what was so different about this one?
The difference was that somewhere in my “I can do anything I choose to do” heart, I took his disbelief and used it to my advantage. His thinking my dreams were impossible made me so mad…but instead of wilting, agreeing with him and quitting, I set out to prove him oh so very wrong! (Bingo!!! There’s the gut reaction I needed to drive me forward)
I took the steps, I set myself up to succeed, and I graduated from that school… I decided that there was nothing and no one who could or would push my dreams away. It wasn’t a perfect road, it was messy, and not road that success is generally built upon. I wasn’t a great student, but my will to get it done was so far greater than the number of times I failed that I persevered my rocky road to graduation!
You see I understood somehow in my youth that I had a choice…I could take the easy route and believe him…or I could actually do what I said I was going to do.
You guys… this business is no different… no one believed me when I said I was going to the top of this company… no one really thought I would.
They still aren’t certain, but I can tell you I am certain! I’m almost there… and believe me it’s been similar to the rocky roads of college… I’ve made a ton of mistakes, and I’ve heard a lot of rejection, but none of that is going to break my entrepreneurial spirit. It actually drives me to work harder!
How certain are you that you are getting to the top of your company? Do you take life lessons from life lessons and utilize them? Do the nay sayers in your world get to be right…. Or do you go and kick ass in life and prove them wrong?
Think about that today… who do you believe in… Them? Or YOU??!?
